Toughening Up Your Shoe Game

Are you running things, or slipping up?

Ideally our roads are never rocky, but to be unprepared for life’s gravel and pebbles due to making poor footwear choices is indefensible. Just in case you’re the type to bring a flip-flop to a boot fight, read on.

Standing in a long line (such as to vote), going on a march, preparing for a wildfire or earthquake-related evacuation, running for what you think could be your life after several manhole covers erupt sending flames over the street— these are a few situations where you want to be wearing solid shoes. Did you hear about the Global Citizen music fest in Central Park a couple years ago— where thousands of revelers ran every which way after a falling fence was thought to be a gunshot? We’ve been seeing what people have been wearing at some of these protests. In 2020, whenever you leave home you should think about roadblocks and emergency situations where your shoe game should be much stronger than it looks from our stoop.

When going to a conference, activist march, or something geo-political in nature where there could be crowds and unfamiliar territory, you should choose footwear carefully. Even if you don’t expect hostile environments— parades, nature hikes, music fests (we really miss those), plain old long days can turn into nightmares if you’re walking around in pathetic shoes. At minimum you’re risking daily comfort which can slow drip into a bad mood. You’ll be one of those I-need-to-go-back-to-the-hotel whiners on vacay. At maximum you’re failing to plan in case of emergency — sacrificing the mission whatever yours may be. No one writes “walk through kilometers of wet grass and gravel” on their daily planner.

BOOTS UP, SANDALS DOWN

Keep sandals, flip-flops, slides — things that expose a majority of your feet — as house shoes. If you’re going to a march, conference or show and may be bus/train-traveling to another city or town— don’t be the sap wearing the aforementioned shower shoes.
By now, every workplace (sadly) has active-shooter instructions which explicitly have “fight back” as a final option. If you can’t stomp a mudhole in somebody’s ass with them, you are an ass for wearing them! I once had a good footwear discussion with a woman who just got off the subway after witnessing a sociopathic bullying incident. We agreed there’s no sense in walking around ANY city street or stepping onto public transportation with something like flip-flops. Violence is bad yes, but you need to be ready at all times to run for your life if violence occurs or kick a criminal in the crotch if you’re an unwitting first responder. Flip-flops say ‘mess with me’, boots say ‘don’t‘.

TIE SHOE CLUB

Keep your shoes tied when you’re on the move or you risk getting sicker, easier, quicker— entirely possibly—it’s important that they don’t touch the ground while walking. Through trace amounts of animal feces and bird dung on the ground “in the world” the diarrhea causing bacteria C. difficile “C-Diff” can travel from the bottoms of our shoes into the human body. It’s a safeguard against joining the feeling-sick club. If you must do the effortless swag thing— make sure the laces don’t touch the ground— especially walking around densely populated areas. There are plenty of stylish ways to lace your shoes. You can even buy a pair of shorter length laces than what came stock on your kicks. If the ship hits the fan and you have to run and your shoe falls off — you are a loser in the true sense of the word.

FLATS ARE NOT SHOES

Unless you’re doing ballet or sauntering indoors — duck those flats. They offer little-to-no support or shielding. Even the name is weak. “Flats”. That they’re an alternative to heels does not mean they’re good for rocky roads or sketchy streets. There are plenty of what your mother would call feminine shoes that are suitable for work and formal situations despite what weakling fashion sites tell you.  Get some footwear with laces and an anatomical footbed to support your dual anacondas. When I see women trucking the streets of Manhattan in what are essentially slippers, I can almost hear her pinky toes crying out. There can be contractual stipulations on what type of footwear is acceptable for women in the workplace, but in 2020 we bet you can find a happy medium. Tell your boss Popdiatry gave you permission to wear shoes with laces or another suitable enclosure system. Nothing says “I fought the power, and the power won” like wearing flats in a revolutionary atmosphere. You’re not a cheap plastic doll. Get some real shoes.

WEAR SOCKS

StanceChewieSock

Socks absorb moisture from your sweaty-ass feet, aid your footwears’ lifespan, and offer a courtesy layer if you’re asked to remove your shoes at a friend’s place. Darn Tough hikers, Wrightsock runners, bodega cheapos, “no-shows”, tube socks- get some freaking socks sis/bro or you don’t belong in this disco. In times of chill barefoot is great for sand and grass, but out of respect and common sense, if you’re going to be trooping to unknown territory — see what’s out there and invest in stockings. The friend referenced in the first sentence might be savvy enough to choose friends wiser and sockless birdbrains might never get a chance to make a first impression.

Boot Season Upon Us

OakSrBrownChromexcelSuedeTrenchBoot

Guys searching for that two-tone look might not do better than these Oak Street Bootmakers Trench boots featuring Horween Chromexcel leather/Peanut suede uppers, calfskin lining, and Vibram soles with stacked leather heels. Your only question will be “what belt do I match with them?”.

IrregularChoiceChewbaccaBoots

Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out in a few weeks and everybody’s celebrating. You can find just about any consumer product branded with the Star Wars character family, but UK’s Irregular Choice has fan girls and boys going extra nuts with highly imaginative offerings like lightsaber, R2D2 and Vader/Stormtrooper high-heels, and these Chewbacca boots (faux Wookie fur).

RussellMoccasinOstrichTravelingSportsmanChukka

The great American Russell Moccasin Company has been hand-manufacturing top-quality outdoorsy footwear in Wisconsin for over 100 years, and I had to hide my credit card when I saw they released some of their models, like the traveling sportsman chukka, in bumpy Ostrich leather. Russells are made-to-order; They offer men’s and women’s fit and a “no-quills” option for the Ostriches.

LLBeanDuckBootChainSole

You’ve got to respect L.L. Bean for continuing to manufacture their signature Duck Boots in Maine, USA despite a straining demand. The Maine factory is busier than a beaver and you may have to sit on a list for your size/style. Any shoe worth having is worth waiting for right? Cheap imitations featuring the “duck” toe are a dime-a-dozen, but to me it was always the chain patterned sole that made these boots original and wicked unique.

LLBeanCanvasMaineHuntingShoes

The leather/rubber combo ducks have been around for ages, but L.L. does offer a few variations on the original, like these waxed Canvas tops, which strike me as the perfect boot for All-Star partisans to wear in the rain. On the topic of sizing- the duck boot design dates back to before boots had insulation and thus leaves room for very heavy socks. Popdiatry normally recommends buying your correct Brannock size, but Ducks most definitely run big so for normal wear get a size down if you can get ’em at all.

IronFistLadiesBatWingBoot

This year Halloween fell on a weekend. Somewhere between the 90s and the 00s the spooky holiday went from a kid thing to an adult thing, and for the open-minded- we’re all wearing costumes all day every day anyway. So Ash Costello, the singer for New Years Day, has her own line of gear with Iron Fist including these superfly Bat Wing Boots made from vegan (synthetic) leather attached to a mega chunky sole. Platform lovers will be in ecstasy, and the wings are removable for use with other footwear in your collection all year ’round.

VibergBlackUnicornServiceBoot

At quick glance, these are some black men’s boots. Closer research reveals that they are Viberg Service Boots with moosehide uppers attached to Dainite soles. The moosehide is referred to as Black Unicorn leather and is produced by one of England’s most respected tanneries. Viberg also flips these into a roughout scout version, and I’m putting my credit card into a frozen ice block right now..

Ironlace: A Shoelace Review

What’s to review about a shoelace? You loop them through your eyelets, tie them, and forget about them right?

Ironlace&Box2

The Ironlace company sells shoelaces which they guarantee to be the strongest in the world- unbreakable in fact! I bought a box of 54″ black ones from Amazon. The laces are rated for a 1,500 pound breaking strength, and are heat-resistant up to 630 degrees Fahrenheit. They’re made in the USA, and are resistant to fire, corrosion, various chemicals, and probably zombie eye-lasers.

IronlaceCloseUpI ordered them to wear, so my apologies if you wanted a see a true trial by fire. The measurement equipment to test the weight claims are beyond my capabilities, and I’m not going to throw acid on, or light them on fire today. The package says they are black, but out of the box they were more of a machine-like gray. They have a unique feel, much like waxed laces, but something heavier. Imagine a fabric version of aircraft cable.

You need to give them a good pull to get a secure knot, as the laces are coated. They even lightened further around the tying area and where the laces were stressed around the eyelets. I had no occurrence of them becoming untied. I bought them for some black boots, but they ended up looking better on a pair of hikers that I had. I called the toll-free number on the Ironlace box and was instantaneously connected to a knowledgeable rep from the company. He was aware of the color issue. Turns out dyes do not take well to the material used for Ironlace, and the company is keeping that in mind for future designs and product descriptions. No one- not even the ruthless Amazon commenters- doubts the strength and durability of the lace. They clearly market these for boots, so for something dressy you could look elsewhere.

IronlaceTiedUpIronlace will be releasing some athletic style (flat) laces soon, and also a line of heavy-duty socks. I spent my own dough on these rounds that ended up looking cool for different boots than I imagined. That I was able to call the company and immediately speak to a rep, who took the time to have an honest discussion about the company and its products, earned my respect from a consumer standpoint. I’ll surely be keeping an eye(let) out for Ironlace and their survivalist, hard-to-kill products, so keep Popdiatry.com on your browser for the latest.

Popdiatribe: InstaKicks, BasketGolf and WorkFun

The brand with the three stripes is releasing an app this summer that’ll let users get custom photographs printed on a pair of Adidas ZX Flux sneakers.

I doubt the brand with the swoosh will ever release high-top golf spikes like the ones pictured below. More likely the image serves as a symbolic reminder that Jordan did enter the golf space this year.  The brand’s first sponsored pro Keegan Bradley has been Instagramming a few pics of actual sneakerish golf shoes with the familiar jumpman logo on them.

JordanGolfHighTopsThe Motley Fool does report this week that Adidas’s market position is weakening compared to Nike’s due in part to performance in the golf category. As Nike’s Jordan takes more steps on the course, Adidas swings its putter with the less buzzy TaylorMade brand.

Heartland Footwear, Inc. manufactures rubber-based industrial boots right here in the USA.  Over the years, they’ve provided go-to protective footwear for those in the food processing industry, and any job that involves oily, chemical environments. This season they escape the workplace with a new line of women and children’s waterproof boots that will stylishly protect casual wearers from dreaded rainstorm wetfoot.

Another brand known more for work footwear, Wolverine’s Cat (Caterpillar), unveiled their own sporty spring/summer boot line at a fashion show in Grand Rapids Thursday.  This pic below has me thumbing through the imaginary rulebook to see if work boots without socks is okay. Since there is no proof that he may be wearing no-show socks, we must withhold judgement at this time.

The First Step

I was a BMX freestyle bike-riding kid in the 90s who loved Vans, Adidas, Converse and Airwalks. Now I’m a self-employed grown man who wears New Balance, Finn Comfort, Naot, and Chippewas. Along the way I collected bits of cultural, structural, and historical information about shoes- footwear- kicks- sneaks. Popdiatry is the platform on which I will expand on these observations with imagination, curiosity and humor.

I believe that the first step toward world peace and global harmony is everyone wearing properly-fitting footwear.  We love the feeling of waking up and taking on the day with a fresh pair of shoes or boots to step into. On days when cheer and positivity seem hard to find- there are those same shoes or boots we wore when things were great. Time for a reminder. Is your pinkie toe suffering due to years of tight fitting? Time to expand.

Shoes have stories, brands have history. Folks have loyalty to certain shoe brands that can be fanatic in nature.  From steel-toe to flip-flop, Popdiatry will be an open-minded observation tower where I look forward to learning as much as I teach. From lace deck to welted sole, I will present and share information about footwear and feet in such a way that no other blog or magazine will. My sources will be cited, and pictures credited. Thanks for reading and be sure to check back often.
