Off The Path: Vaxx Repping Caps

We were bumping the new Papoose song the other night. In some of his promo shots, Pap is wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates cap featuring the big ‘P’. He’s obviously repping for his name. Like when Ice-T wore a ‘T’ (Texas) cap on his Midnight Marauders cover shot, wearing gear to subliminally represent something else is not new whatsoever. If you grew up in an area where street gangs were active, or know about old northeast sports fan beefs, you know all about hat-as-identification type styling. If you know about love and respect in the twenty-twenties, our ‘gang’ idea is very peaceful. Violence offers abhorrence, vaccines offer hope. Far from gangly, start thinking spangly.

Now that vaccines in America for COVID-19 are all over the place, (we’re getting #2 of Pfizer next week) we were thinking of creative ways to creatively ‘rep’ being vaxxed. As our society emerges from lockdown, there’s all manner of debate on how to brandish proof that one has received a vaccination for participation in recreational and social situations. We’re not saying wearing a cap with a ‘V’ on it is substitute for official documentation, but (have some fun with us) we picked out a few caps that we think a stylish pro-science head like YOU could pull off if you rocked it right. #VaxxGang represent.

Villanova Wildcats is a no-brainer. Crafty cats could even put an “axxed” after the “V” on it and take it to another level.

This Vanderbilt University cap could work. When you walk into your first party post-vaxx, you might feel like a star wearing this one just so.

Victory Brewing straight out of Downingtown, PA (love their Prima Pilsner). Subliminally, we like how this reps ‘victory’, even if it’s a personal one for you just getting through all this covidy crud with your head still attached.

Minor League Baseball has a few Vs. We might let you in the fun-gang with this Visalia Rawhide cap.

Good tune right? We know there are other V-caps out there. At us on twitter if you know some good ones we missed. We hope you are well. Things will never be the same again becasue of COVID, but we’re thankful to all the scientists and health workers that made this vaccination rollout happen. Think about it: Things were never normal anyway!

Radnom pin my bro got when he received his vaccination in Massachusetts. Brand: Penzeys

Off The Path is where we feature some non-footwear wearbles. Peace.

Editor’s note. I had such a problem getting the original cover image onto this post I gave up and used this still from the original “V” TV miniseries.

You already know that we save pictures of discarded shoes for Instagram, but this one was too rectangular for IG:

You already know about minimalist toe-shoes. Vibram has FiveFingers (5 toe slots), Fila has Skele-Toes (4 toe slots) and now Body Glove occupies the “3-toe” slot between Fila and  Ninja Tabis with their 3T line of footwear:

Shoes that Grow Up

Have you heard of Because International– the shoe that is meant to be adjustable from size 5 to a size 12?

The creator of these wants a lasting shoe that can be adjusted according to the growth spurts of school-aged children with the use of straps and snaps.  It’s a great idea. I’d be interested in seeing if it can be achieved in a non-janky manner.

Check out their crowdrise video to hear for yourself.

Some day, touch screen devices will be able to transmit a true sense of touch. You’d be able to run your finger over this shot of the collaboration Viberg Boots did with Leffot (Manhattan) and feel the eye-catching grain of the triple bullhide.

Which reminds me; I was flicking through the Zappos app the other day and saw these New Balance MU950 (made in China) “umpire” shoes. According to NewBalance.com the 950 series is the official on-field footwear of Major League Baseball umpires. I like the look of that sole; I’d call it ‘cleat lite’.  They even have other styles with big pads over the lace deck. Surely a hit for your umpire Halloween costume.

DiscardedOnBroadwayWe started an Instagram for Popdiatry. At first I wasn’t sure what I should post. Good pictures would be used here, but since I started writing for Pop D, I’ve been spotting more discarded footwear than ever. So our Instagram will be mostly abandoned, thrown away shoes- like these above spotted on Broadway in Brooklyn, NY.

NBA is back in a couple weeks! Didja see the clip of Laker’s Ronnie Price throwing his Nike (after it fell off) at Golden State Warrior Andre Iguodala?

It was worth a try- technical foul though..

Since you bought a baseball player’s sock for so much, it put a huge dent in your basketball sneaker budget and you can no longer afford $240 for these new Titolo Reebok pumps. No problem because Shaquille O’Neal now has his own inexpensive brand of high-tops available at Walmart.

It’s no secret that Nike is chomping their competition in worldwide sneaker and apparel sales. Rival Adidas went and hired three Nike design vets and will stick them in a Brooklyn design studio in hopes they can carve a bigger piece of the North American pie.

Since you bought that Jeter sock, you won’t have enough for a pair of these $400 New Balance Horween leather models

Sneakers actually; just in time for Halloween from Li-Ning. They might have something promotional to do with a cable TV show about a killer. Surely they’ll be great to wear at job interviews and other dress-to-impress occasions.

Cannon and Tom Ford brought them to life in the form of diamond encrusted loafers. Jason the jeweler tags them at 2 million. Chances are they’ll be auctioned off for charity; then we’ll see if they fetch more than some $666,000 ruby red slippers that Judy Garland had worn while filming Wizard of Oz did at a Christie’s auction fourteen years ago.

According to Guinness, no one knows how many red shoes Garland used in the production of W.O.O. The above pic is from the Smithsonian (not the pair auctioned).

One more thing: Toe cameras put the sneak in sneaker.

Toecamsneaker

A Japanese law-enforcement official points out the pinhead camera embedded in a brand of sneakers which have already sold 2,500 pairs while society figures out if they should be legal.  It’s a law tightrope, because multiple cameras on just about everything we wear are “OK” (really though?) , but being so easily able to take photos upwardly, undetected… skirt wearers take note.

Your Feet and BMX Freestyle Flatlanding

There’s a flatland BMX freestyle contest going down in southeastern Massachusetts this Sunday.

FlatlandFracas5

Flatland freestyle, as you may gather, is done on flat land, and often involves intricate footwork where the rider dances with the bike while trying to avoid touching their feet to the ground. I chatted with the manager of the Flatland Fracas contest series- my old BMX chum- Rick Macdonald, about the shoe angle:

P. What type of footwear do you recommend for riders when flatlanding?

Rick: Mostly low or mid top skateboarding shoes like Vans, Etnies, etc… Some older guys who need the support are using full hightop basketball shoes, but those are getting hard to find with a flat sole, or no devices implanted into them. I don’t know how some of these riders do it with low-top canvas shoes. I would break a metatarsal or something within minutes.

P. Remember those “bear-trap” style pedals? Does anyone use those flatlanding, or were those more for BMX racing?

Rick: Nobody uses those for flatland- one false move and you are talking a few hundred stitches! Actually, flatlanders prefer a plastic pedal. Some even use a flat, grip tape surfaced pedal that looks like a mini-skateboard.

Moto Bicycles pedal
Moto Bicycles pedal

P. Do you ever put extra grip tape on your bike?

Rick: Sometimes I will put a small piece at the base of my seat post (where the platform used to be) for a little assurance on certain tricks, but today’s most progressive riders don’t touch the frame much with their feet, or even scuff their shoes on the tires… it’s all fast rolling and pumping for momentum! It’s pretty crazy to see the evolution of what is possible on these bikes after so long.

P. Do you still have any of those Kool-Stop Vans brake shoes?
KoolStopVansBrakePads

Rick: Kool-Stop actually sent us a ton of brake shoes to give out at the Fracas last year! They still make the Vans shoes today, even though many BMX riders use no brakes at all. That trend comes and goes, but brakes will always be part of riding. No brakes equals quicker worn-out shoes.

P. I find a lot of shoes these days come with really long laces. When I BMX freestyled, my worst dread was having the shoelace get caught in the chainwheel. Have you ever laced your shoes “bicycle” style?

Image: Lacing Shoes app
Image: Lacing Shoes app

Rick: No, that’s an excellent idea though. I sometimes cut them shorter and melt the ends with a lighter- a “do it yourself” aglet.

P. You are running this event, and you also still ride. What’s your current stunt peg scheme? platforms, fork-stands, etc…

Rick: Years ago, standing platforms pretty much disappeared from freestyle bikes, as balance tricks and any frame-standing moves were pretty much phased out. Riding styles change and that drives the design of the bikes, but axle pegs in varying quantities will always be found on freestyle BMX bikes.

P. Do any good foot-plants lately?

Rick: I love foot-planting and boosting over a planter or curb, and it seems like a good footplant or fastplant can always fit into street riding, all you need is the right loading dock! Some things will never go out of style in BMX.
